We grow and use penny royal as a bug repellent. It is a mint. We grab a handful, smash it in our hands, and rub our necks and face. Smells pretty good to us, but the bugs don't seem to like it. It is not as good as Deet.

Good idea, yikes. I've never tried this with pennyroyal, but have found yarrow to be very effective. It grows wild all over the mountains here, and I'll just gather a handful and rub it on my neck, arms, etc, to keep mosquitoes from biting. Works for about 20 minutes and then you have to rub on some more, but I prefer that to using DEET or similar.
